Universal Security Instruments SS-770 9-Volt Battery Micro Profile Design Ionization Smoke and Fire Alarm Review

Universal Security Instruments SS-770 9-Volt Battery Micro Profile Design Ionization Smoke and Fire Alarm
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
SS-770 Acceptable very Economical Smoke Alarm, long battery life
The Universal SS-770 Ionization Smoke and Fire Alarm is ordinary but unusually small: 4-inch diameter, 1-inch thick, white plastic. Extremely economical $4.45 from HmDpt 6/16/10. Manufacturer generic six page insert: [...]
This smoke alarm works but is as basic as possible: 9V battery only, ionization detector only, no LED at all, no hush button. Just a weekly test button and the alarm beeper. It comes with a basic non-alkaline 9V carbon-zinc battery that should last for about 4 years. A higher-quality battery would last longer. The alarm itself is supposed to be replaced ten years after the date of manufacture. It comes with a worthless 5 year warranty which requires a payment of $4. Made in China.
The missing hush button is the worst feature of this alarm. You are supposed to mount it on the ceiling, or within 12 inches of the ceiling. But if it goes off because you burned the toast, it could be hard to reach! Even after you have figured out how to rip it off the wall (twist and pull), the irritating alarm cannot be silenced until you figure out how to disconnect the battery, which is not easy to do if you are in a bad mood.
The smoke alarm mounts on a round white plastic base plate, which is screwed to the wall or ceiling with two long skinny screws that are only partly threaded. The screws work OK on walls but would not securely mount in to ceiling sheet-rock. Secure mounting would require larger screws and/or plastic sheet-rock inserts.
A battery-operated smoke alarm like this is a great life-saving tool for people who sincerely want to have this kind of protection. But if you are a landlord dealing with tenants who may not properly replace batteries as needed, or someone who just never wants to be bothered with taking care of equipment, you need alarms that are wired into the AC power.
Because this is an ionization (radioactive) type of smoke alarm, it uses very little battery power. There is no need to replace the battery twice a year; that would be wasteful. The 9V battery should typically last much longer than one year. If you are comfortable using a volt meter, measure the battery twice a year and replace it when it gets much below 9.0V. The SS-770 should go on working until the battery gets down to about 7.5V, at which point it will start chirping about every 40 seconds.
Based on current measurements, an ordinary "heavy duty" 9V battery should last about 4 years, a good alkaline battery should last about 6 years, and a super-duper Lithium battery should last over 10 years.
These are actual power measurements:
9.5V 6microAmps + current spikes
Low-power measurements:
3.2-3.6V (3.2-3.8V) quiet fast chirp
3.6-5.2V (3.8-6.2V) 3 beeps, pause; repeat
5.2-7.3V (6.2-7.7V) quick chirp every 41 seconds - time to replace the battery!
^volt range going down^ (^volt range going up^)
non-techical translation: don't let the battery voltage get below 8 volts

Safe-T-Alert FLUSH MOUNT 12V RV CO Alarm-BROWN Review

Safe-T-Alert FLUSH MOUNT 12V RV CO Alarm-BROWN
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before ordering this unit I spoke with a Safe-T-Alert representative. She assured me that this unit was a direct replacement for the CCI unit that was in my RV. It is not. I needed to rout out the oopening on two sides and narrow it slightly on one side. However, except for the woodworking, it was easy to install and works well. As long as they continue to make this unit and keep the sizes the same I will buy replacements was each age out. If it fit exactly in the openning as I was led to believe I would have rated it 5 stars.

Universal Security Instruments SS-2895 120-Volt AC/DC Wired-In Photoelectric Smoke and Fire Alarm Review

Universal Security Instruments SS-2895 120-Volt AC/DC Wired-In Photoelectric Smoke and Fire Alarm
Average Reviews:

This unit is the type you need in an area where nuisance tripping is a problem. I recently hardwired a series of alarms throughout my home and the alarm nearest the kitchen was frequently going off, causing of course all the others to sound simultaneously. All the other alarms in the house are ionization sensing units and this photoelectric unit connected to the plug-in and mounting bracket already installed in my ceiling.

GE Simon 3 Wireless Security System Review

GE Simon 3 Wireless Security System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well worth the money for the system and can be monitored by yourself for no monthly fee. I bought this system about 1 year ago for my apartment. The instructions leave a lot to be desired. That is why I gave it a 4 star. Written in Engineerese--- YOU have to figure out what they were telling you. Find someone that's set up one before so you don't wind up pulling out all your hair. If I had to install the same system in my place again, I could probably manage it in under an hour ( I have 5 sensors ). I bought a Tracfone with a one year subscription for about $100. and programmed the system to call me silently. Saves me from having to pay monitor fees and since it is silent, I can respond within just a few minutes and see who has walked into my place or opened a window. Well worth the money for the peace of mind. Hope this helps someone looking for a home security system.

First Alert CO605 Carbon Monoxide Plug-In Alarm with Battery Backup Review

First Alert CO605 Carbon Monoxide Plug-In Alarm with Battery Backup
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I really like this CO Detector. Don't confuse this with a model that only works on battery power or A/C power. This one runs on A/C power until your power goes out and then runs on battery power. This is necessary. Say your power goes out and someone stupidly turns on a gas heater in your house. The detector will go off when the CO level rises. If your detector only runs on A/C power, you'd be toast. For your sake and your kids sake, by a CO detector that runs on both A/C and battery power. I've had this for a year with no problems.

Protect yourself and your family from the potentially deadly effects of carbon monoxide with the First Alert CO605 Plug-In Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Battery Backup. This easy-to-install, UL-listed alarm features advanced technology, a user-friendly design, and backup battery power to provide continual monitoring of carbon monoxide levels. It also comes complete with an "Alarm Action" chart that instructs you on what to do if the alarm sounds.
WHERE TO PLACE SAFETY PRODUCTS:Smoke Alarms: 1 in every bedroom and at least 1 on every level of the home.
Carbon Monoxide Alarms: 1 on every level of the home and 1 in each sleeping area.
Fire Extinguishers: 1 on every level of the home and 1 each in the kitchen and garage.
Carbon Monoxide: The Leading Cause of Accidental Deaths in the U.S.Carbon monoxide, an invisible, odorless gas, is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until it's too late. Because you can't see, taste, or smell it, CO can kill you before you even know it's there. Likewise, exposure to low levels over time can make you ill.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that every home have at least one carbon monoxide alarm with an audible warning signal--like the CO605--installed near sleeping areas. An alarm like the CO605 can detect the CO you can't see, smell, or taste before it causes any physical harm to you or your family.
Electrochemical Technology for Accuracy and Longer LifeThe CO605 uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor--the most accurate CO sensor available. In comparison to more commonly available technologies, electrochemical technology is highly accurate, requires a lower amount of power, and boasts a longer life. If the CO605's sensor detects a high concentration of CO, the unit will sound a clear, loud, 85-decibel alarm, giving you a chance to either ventilate the area or safely evacuate.
A/C Power with Battery Backup and User-Friendly Design This unit runs on A/C power, but in case of an electrical outage, it will switch to battery operation. This gives you peace of mind during storms--when you're more likely to use generators that could potentially give off dangerous levels of CO.
For added convenience, installation is a snap. Simply plug the CO605 into any wall outlet--with no additional mounting--and it's ready to go. The unit features two 'AA' batteries to provide backup power to the monitor in the case of power disruption or outage.
Operation is equally trouble free. One button clearly labeled "Test/Silence" lets you test the unit to see if it's running properly or silence it during a false alarm.
Continually Monitors Both CO Levels and Battery PowerTo give you real peace of mind, the CO605 continually monitors CO and re-alarms if dangerous levels persist. At the same time, a low-battery signal let's you know when it's time to replace the backup batteries (included); a low-battery mute quiets the signal for up to eight hours. An easy, front-open compartment allows for easy battery changes without dismounting the alarm, and an end-of-life chirp lets you know when it's time to replace the unit.
The CO605 comes with two 'AA' batteries and a five-year limited warranty. It also comes complete with an "Alarm Action" chart that instructs you on what to do if the alarm sounds.
What's in the Box Carbon monoxide alarm, two 'AA' batteries, and user's manual complete with "Alarm Action" chart.

Average Reviews:

We have several of them that came with our new house in addition to the 1204 model smoke alarms. They are all problematic. They go through batteries every 6 months and they 'chirp' in the middle of the night. The company is not easy to deal with. Recently all of them went off at the same time at 4 am and there was no smoke or fire... the company says to vacuum them out... easy on 15 foot ceilings?... they are a bad product. I am going to replace them all with a reliable brand.
